This post is for all of my friends out there that are currently applying to med school and those of you who will be applying soon.

You’re reading this because you want to be a doctor. I’ll tell you right now that the road to medicine is a lengthy and difficult one filled with year upon year of new challenges. I say this because before you embark on this journey, you must understand what lies ahead of you. Once you grasp the sacrifice that you are about to make, you must then ensure that this journey is for you by thoroughly pondering the reasons why you want to become a doctor. If indeed you have a calling; a true deep desire to help and heal those in need then verily, no journey is too difficult. Instead, you will find it tremendously enjoyable and with each challenge that you pass, you will find yourself feeling an invigorating satisfaction.

My father once told me that if you undertake this incredibly difficult path and you do it for yourself or your own personal gain then success is not guaranteed. However, if you do this baring the flag of your friends and family, your community, and those in need, then success is imminent. Of course, I’m paraphrasing because I could never be as eloquent as he is.

Alright, so now that we’ve talked about the deep philosophical stuff, lets talk about the details on how to apply to med school. Remember, my experience comes from being a Texas medical student. Most of what I say applies to all medical schools in the country but some things might pertain mainly to Texas med schools.

First, here’s an over-simplified summary of what you need to do (we’ll go into more detail on each one later).

Application to Medical School:

- Make a timeline for your application with all important dates and deadlines.
- Start building up some volunteer, community service, and extracurriculars
- Start acquiring your letters of recommendation
- Write and re-write and re-write your personal statement
- Study hard and make the best grades possible to strengthen that app
- Prepare for the MCAT in accordance to timeline (practice tests are your friend!)
- Stay focused and enjoy the process!

In future posts, I’ll go into step-by-step detail on each one of these and the best way to be successful starting with planning a good time-line. In the mean time, this should give you a good overview on what you should expect!

Today I’ll be starting my switch to a polyphasic sleeping cycle.  Polyphasic sleeping (aka segmented sleep) is when you break up the usual “block” of sleep into smaller naps that are evenly spaced throughout the day.  Also, the naps are very short (15-30 minutes) and done every 4 hours so in the end,  you’re sleeping only a total of 2 to 3 hours.  The most obvious benefit of this is gaining an extra 6 hours of awake time a day.
